Allergens, ingredients, and the 2023 recall.

If you came here because you searched our name and the word recall, you are in the right place. Here is the whole thing, in order, with nothing left out.

What happened

In March 2023 we pulled one batch of Death Rides a Bull off the shelf. Five ounce glass bottles, best-by 8/14/2024, UPC 00860002507354. That batch, and only that batch.

The apple cider vinegar we bought had been reformulated to include soy. Our supplier did not tell us. The label on those bottles did not declare soy, because as far as we knew there was no soy in them. There was a trace amount, and a trace amount is enough to matter to somebody with a soy allergy.

So we recalled it. Voluntarily, before anyone asked us to, and before anyone got sick. There were no reported allergic reactions. The bottles had gone out online and to shops in Durham, Raleigh and Chapel Hill, and we went and got them back.

What we changed

We stopped buying from that vinegar supplier. Every ingredient we bring in now has to come with a current spec sheet, and a supplier changing a formulation is a change we have to be told about in writing before it lands in our kitchen.

It is a small operation. Two of us. That is exactly why we would rather lose a batch than gamble with somebody's allergy.

Can any of that batch still be out there

No. Those bottles were best-by August 14, 2024 and they were recalled in March 2023. Nothing from that batch has been in the market for years.

If you are holding an old bottle of Death Rides a Bull and you want to be sure, look at the bottom of the bottle. If it reads 8/14/2024, do not use it, and email us. If it reads anything else, it was never part of the recall.

Buying from us today

Every bottle carries its full ingredient statement on the label. That label is the authority, not this page and not a description on a product listing.

Our whole line is vegan and gluten free.

If you have a soy allergy, or any allergy, and you want the ingredient statement for a specific bottle before you open it, write to us with the lot code off the bottle and one of us will send it back the same day. We would rather answer that email a hundred times than have you guess once.

Proud Certifications
